We are talking about the striking beauty of Precious, a movie that took festivals by storm and is going to do more than that. An adaptation of a novel that shocked many, the movie is bound to transport the viewer into a hellish place no human being wants to find himself – in the shoes of Precious, obese and perpetually abused. But as much as the film thrusts us into the dump as much it is uplifting. It has strong performance from all the cast and it has already garnered its director a plethora of awards, hopefully more to come with the Oscars. No matter how hard the experience of the film is to take in, it shouldn’t be missed because it redefines the understanding of modern cinema as escapist entertainment.

A lot of people like going to movies where they are given a possibility to get acquainted with the latest achievement in movie products and of course the movies which they have been waiting for so much time. That is why a lot of people like visiting different film festivals which are created for such purposes.

Only here they can not only watch different movies from different countries but meet their favorite film stars and directors who present their movies. So people stand in a long queue just to see them getting out of their cars and going to the cinema. Film production occurs in five stages. The first one is the writing of the script and designing of a blueprint for a film. Next comes pre-production when the cast and crew are selected, the shoot is being prepared and sets built, costumes designed, etc. Production is a stage where the shooting takes place and the raw material is recorded. During post-production the film is edited, such aspects as sound, music, sound and visual effects are taken care of. The last stage is sales and distribution when the movie is screened for potential buyers, chosen by a distributor and reaches its cinema and/or home media audience.

The search and demand for all things related to movie celebrities is very high. It’s probably because by knowing that movie stars are also people we feel closer to them and are given a chance to relate to the magical world of cinema on a very personal level. Believe it or not, some people would not go see a movie if the star in it is notorious for something they oppose of. In real life, that is. People seem to equate fact and fiction and the ensuing confusion has an effect on movie going choices.

But not everything is that superficial. Some celebrities from the world of movies are changing the masses’ views on morality, charity and the global problems of humanity. These people choose to use their money and wealth to make certain causes heard and that is laudable indeed. The number of festivals around the world is staggering and they differ from each other dramatically. The crème of festivals are the following venues known to everyone familiar with cinema: Cannes, Venice, Toronto, Berlin, Shanghai, Moscow, San Sebastián, Montréal, Locarno (since 2002), Karlovy Vary, Mar del Plata, Cairo and Tokyo, as well as Edinburgh and San Francisco. Out of the bunch Cannes is the most important and prestigious. There are also important independent film festivals like Sundance, Telluride Film Festival, Austin’s South and Tribeca Film Festival. There are special animation film festivals and even eco-friendly ones like the Environmental Film Festival held at Yale University.

But there is another type of festival like the Rockland Film Festival. It’s no ordinary fest as it encourages cinematographers to merge fact and fiction which is apparent from its title The True/False Film Fest. The atmosphere there is creative and non-competitive, egalitarian and stress-free. Filmmakers get to communicate and exchange ideas and come out with extraordinary new skills. This is the place to be and a festival that is looking into the future.
